Carrizozo Music Inc and William Feasley
celebrate WORLD ART DAY 2019
in Carrizozo, New Mexico, USA
The Music inspired by Goya’s Art. Two selections from Enrique Granados’ opera Goyescas are performed with the Naked Maja and Clothed Maja (the music being two of Granados’ Maja arias and incidental music from the opera). Four selections from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Capriccios of Goyabased on the seminal book of etchings Los Capprichos that nearly had Goya dragged in front of the Inquisition. This is followed by “Goya Portraits” by the contemporary Cuban American composer Jose Lezcano (featuring Goya’s Royal Family, the Blind Guitarist and Portrait of Emanuela Zarate) - I gave the world premiere of this work in Prague in 2006. Lastly is a work I commissioned from the Argentine composer Marcelo Ferraris, El Tango Negro (homenaje a Francisco Goya) along with a couple of Goya’s infamous Black Paintings.
Music that I (Feasley) associate with Goya. My journey with the guitar began in earnest with my family moving to Malaga, Spain, for a year so my father could paint the Spanish landscapes and people. I have an indelible association of Spain, the art of Goya (and of my father) and the guitar. I thus end the program with “Invocation and Dance” by Rodrigo paired with Goya’s ghoulish masterpiece “the Incantation” and then, to end on a note of light and brilliance, Guajiras de Lucia by the Spanish Flamenco master paired with Goya’s final and incandescent “The Milk Maid of Bordeaux”.

Performed by award-winning classical guitarist, William Feasley, Echoes of Goya is a multimedia presentation on the life of the famous painter and his impact on several generations of composers.
The program is divided into three parts:
The music that was around Goya as he was making his art - The program begins with three short works by an obscure Spanish guitarist/composer, Fernando Fernandiere, who came from Madrid around the same time as Goya and grew up close to Goya’s hometown of Fuendetodos. Three of Goya’s early “cartoons” (painted to be turned into tapestries by the royal tapestry works in Cadiz) are displayed during - Fernandiere’s Three Pieces. Next comes music of Fernando Sor, the great Spanish guitarist who enjoyed the patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Alba at the same time as Goya’s alleged liaison with the Duchess of Alba. Sor’s Grand Solo is performed with Goya’s epic portrait of the Duchess (pointing to “solo Goya” - “only Goya” written in the dust at her feet).
